Gustavo Petro, a short, skinny, bespectacled guy prone to spending hours debating complicated issues like Latin American geopolitics, is not the typical figure one imagines when thinking of a political firebrand.
Petro is also feared by many in the business sector, where he is seen as an arrogant late Hugo Chavez, and many have set off alarm bells to see him maintain steady support. But the onslaught has only strengthened him in the eyes of his followers.
Few Colombians would be against such goals. But Petro generates as much rejection as support (or perhaps even more). In a poll taken at a recent convention of business leaders, only 1.5 percent said they would vote for Petro. Overall, 56 percent of Opinómetro respondents said they had a «negative image» of him, one of the worst rates in the field.
Shortly after joining the guerrillas, Petro caught the attention of veterans like Ricardo Rosanía, who called him «a promising young man.» Petro quickly rose through the leadership of the group’s political wing and said he never participated in armed actions.
